The new Mercedes E-class. The last Stuttgart model with combustion engines

We showed you the first photos of the new German limousine thanks to a leak already in the afternoon, but at the moment the Mercedes E-class with the type designation W214 has had its official world premiere, so we can offer you the most important technical data, what you will find in the equipment and a cross-section of its most interesting technologies. What to make of it? We could mention several things, but what struck us the most was the fact that the new generation executive car only offers four-cylinder power units. But we have already been promised two six-cylinders.

The new Mercedes E-class should arrive on the market in the summer, and what we indicated in the beginning applies. This car is most likely the last truly Stuttgart model to be powered by internal combustion engines.

The classic German sedan is 4949 mm long, 1880 mm wide, 1468 mm high, and its wheelbase has grown by 22 mm to a final 2961 millimeters. The automaker talks about a richly dimensioned interior, but its photo showed us a long time ago, so we add just the basic volume of the luggage compartment of 540 liters.

Before we get to the engines, it is definitely worth mentioning, for example, the very respectable coefficient of aerodynamic resistance Cd 0.23, the optional Airmatic air suspension with continuously adjustable adaptive dampers ADS+, and you will be able to order the active wheel steering system of the rear axle. By the way, there is a five-link independent suspension at the front and a four-link independent suspension at the rear, in both cases supplemented by a transverse screw stabilizer.

Depending on the market, you get a 5G connection, digital keys (for now only for Apple devices, but you can share it with 16 other users), automatic air conditioning with electrically adjustable Digital Vent Control vents or automatic remote parking via a mobile phone with a speed increased to 4 km/h h...

The manufacturer says that up to half of all engines available on the market from day one will be plug-in hybrids of the fourth generation with a range in pure electric mode of "more than 100 km according to WLTP", while without the combustion unit they will let you reach the limit of 140 km/h. All gasoline and diesel engines will also automatically receive an integrated starter-generator, which will have a slightly increased power compared to the previous generation from 15 to 17 kW (ie from 20 to 23 hp) and will also add a supporting torque for combustion units of up to 205 Nm.

In Europe, the E 200 version with a turbocharged two-liter gasoline engine tuned to 204 hp and 320 Nm (plus 23 hp/205 Nm starter-generator), as well as the E 220 d with a four-cylinder diesel engine with a volume of 2.0 liters and an output of 197 hp/440 Nm plus 23 hp/205 Nm and the same diesel with the 4Matic system.

Three other designs are rechargeable. E 300 e, E 300 4 Matic and E 400 4 Matic. The sad thing is that they are all two-liter units again, only with better performance parameters and more interesting dynamics. Tristovka has 204 hp/320 Nm, plus an electric motor of 129 hp/440 Nm and an additional battery with a capacity of 25.4 kWh and internal cooling (it will be possible to charge it with alternating current with a power of 55 kW). The E 400 delivers 252 hp/400 Nm and the same electric motor and battery. We only add that the E 300 e will offer system 230 kW (313 hp) and 550 Nm, and the top E 400 e system 280 kW (381 hp) and 650 newton meters.

All power units will be combined with a 9-speed automatic as standard, don't wait for a manual. And in the official press release, the car company adds that the range of diesel and gasoline engines will soon be followed by six-cylinder engines, while the petrol engine will be electrified. But she did not publish the details.

The first leak of the images was apparently done by a well-known group from the Cochespias site, but strangely enough, in the meantime, the photos of the new E-Class quietly disappeared from their Instagram account. Of course, this does not mean that the spread of carelessly published data will stop, so at the moment the new Mercedes is appearing on more and more pages across the Internet.

In the pictures, you can see the car developed under the type designation W214, whose design was inspired by the current C and S classes, and at the same time, a reference to the electric limousines of the EQ series can also be seen in its shapes.

Even if the Éčko is technically related to the mentioned cars, this does not mean that we have an enlarged C-class or a reduced S-class in front of us. The car maintains its originality in details and as a whole as much as possible, as evidenced by, for example, its headlights.

They are undulated at the bottom, and although all the elements are housed under a common cover, the split daytime running light elements are an obvious reference to the older E-classes with the W210, W211 and W212 designations before the modernization.

Even more interesting are the rear lights connected in the middle by a piece of plastic. Light-emitting diodes were integrated into their structure to form stylized three-pointed stars - a pair on each side. And the silhouette with a flowing roof line is no less impressive, so from certain angles the new Mercedes looks a bit like a four-door coupe.
